Funerary stele for Licinia Maela

Funerary stele for Licinia Maela, daughter of Marcus, that marked the resting place, in a
Felicitas Iulia Olisipo
necropolis
, of the mortal remains of a woman who lived during the 1st century AD. In a later era, when the funerary stele lost its significance, it was used as construction material. When it was found, in 1939, it was integrated in the wall of one of the oldest segments of the São Jorge Castle. Before it was forgotten among the stones composing the wall, the monument was still used to engrave a new inscription during the Muslim era, maintaining its epigraphic role. In fact, beneath the Roman funerary inscription, in Latin, there are Kufic characters typical of the 10th century AD, whose text commemorates the reconstruction of Lisbon, in 985 AD, in the time of Almansor.
