Ara dedicated to the Sun and Ocean

Large
ara
in lioz limestone whose upper part was cut. Dedicated to the Sun and Ocean by senator Caius Iulius Celsus. Discovered in 1907, being used as a table base in a lateral porch in the Hermitage of São Miguel de Odrinhas, it was originally in the sanctuary of Alto da Vigia. Presently part of the epigraphic collection in the Archaeological Museum of São Miguel de Odrinhas.

Translation

To the Sun and Ocean, Caius Iulius Celsus, son of Caius and member of the tribe Quirina. Admitted to the (senatorial) order under Emperor Antonino Augustus; under the same Emperor, legate sent to Lusitania for census; Roman procurator for the Lugdunensis and Aquitania provinces; charged with recruitment of soldiers in Aquitania; procurator of assets the twentieth of inheritance in Rome; procurator of Neaspolis and the Mausoleum of Alexandria; procurator of the twentieth of inheritance in the Narbonensis and Aquitania province; curator of the via Lignaria Triumphalis. Donated this offering.
