Cetariae (Rua Marques Leal Pancada, Cascais)

Group of tanks for salting and production of fish products (like
garum
). This complex was located mid-slope, over the western cliff of present-day Praia da Ribeira (Creek or Fish Beach) that, in the Roman era, was used as a fishing port. A
Tuscan
order column
capital
was found inside one of the
cetariae
, together with ceramics used in construction and domestically, supporting the existence nearby of other buildings of the same period. Three
cetariae
were unveiled, two only partially. At least three others are thought to exist under the pavement of Rua Marques Leal Pancada. The installation of the Castle on this site implied the destruction of Roman structures (the builders placed the tower's foundations over them).
