Epitaph for Titus Callaeus Niger

Epitaph for Titus Callaeus Niger, son of Titus, member of the tribe
Galeria
, which mentions that the deceased is Veteranus. It is unclear whether this word is an additional nickname joining the
cognomen
Niger or whether it refers his military condition, in the reserves. The text is engraved upon a plaque found during the 1961-62 archaeological campaign, in Praça da Figueira. The plaque was originally upon another funerary monument, perhaps used as a lid for one of the niches in a
columbarium
(monument with a number a niches where lay the urns with the ashes of the deceased). On the same site, during the same archaeological campaign, another plaque was found that refers additional elements of this family, suggesting the existence of a common monument for the whole family (
columbarius
,
mausoleum
...) or at least a space in the
necropolis
reserved for their funerary monuments.
